KSUP Decries Gunda Tax Levied In Temporary Markets

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: The Krishak-Sramik Unnayan Parishad (KSUP) raged against the vandalism meted out by the mohaldars against the poor stall-owners of the daily/weekly makeshift markets.

President of the Parsihad, Pradip Kalita while addressing the press on Wednesday said, “The mohaldars levy gunda-tax on the stall-owners of the daily/weekly makeshift markets in various areas of the city. Moreover, these taxes are hundred times more than the amount fixed by the government. A cloud of darkness has engulfed the unfortunate stall-owners who already run their families on a meager amount.”

Kalita further alleged that a chanda (donation) syndicate has emerged in recent times, who under the pretext of some occasion commit day-light robbery. He speculated that it was rather mysterious that inspite of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) supervision, such hooliganisms can take place.

“There should be an end to the mohaldar system in the city. We urge the State government to hand over the responsibilities of the daily/weekly makeshift markets to the GMC instead. Also, we have addressed a letter to Guwahati police commissioner to ban the chanda syndicate and another letter was addressed to the Chief Minister to put an end to the hooliganism by the mohaldars on the weekly market in Beltola,” said Kalita.
