GUWAHATI: One of the promises made by the candidates during the elections for the representatives of different wards of the city was the implementation of proper lighting systems across the streets of Guwahati, but that seems to have remained a dream as several parts of the city are yet to have proper lighting.
Several parts of the city, including both major roads and smaller lanes, remain void of proper lighting, causing problems for people residing in these parts of the city. One such locality is the Kharghuli area of Guwahati, parts of which become completely dark after the sun goes down. Local residents mentioned that the lights were installed about a month back, but have become non-functional within such a short duration. They questioned the urban local body as to the causes of such a failure and demanded that the same be repaired immediately.
The lack of proper lighting not only creates problems for pedestrians while navigating roads with potholes and footpaths with open manholes but also for the drivers of two-wheelers which often skid and lose balance on these roads. The lack of proper lighting also acts as a beneficial factor for the anti-social elements and miscreants who use the darkness as a cover to flee after committing any crime.
Other localities, including parts of the greater Shantipur- Bhutnath area, also face similar woes. With even a light shower, puddles of accumulated water make it impossible for people to walk even during the day, and it becomes way harder at night with the lack of proper lighting. These often lead to small accidents in these areas.
Another key concern that has been raised is that while street lights in several parts of the city remain unlit, those in many other parts remain on even during the day. The lack of proper switching mechanisms or personnel to man these functions has been a major area of concern for the people as this causes huge losses of electricity and finally leads to power cuts.
