Left bodies demand jobs and job security in Assam

GUWAHATI: The CITU (Centre of Indian Trade Unions), SFI (Students' Federation of India) and the DYFI (Democratic Youth Federation of India) have raised the demand for jobs and job security in the State.

At a joint meeting presided over by Biren Sarma, Loknath Adhikari and Kalyan Buragohain here on Thursday, CITU general secretary Tapan Sarma raised the demand for jobs and job security in the State. The meeting decided to entrust all the Opposition parties to include issues like jobs and job security in their respective manifestos for the forthcoming Assembly election in the State. The meeting has also decided to expose the BJP-led State government's failure to provide jobs and job security in the State. It has also decided to start a campaign, including a signature campaign, highlighting the failure of the government on this front.

In a statement issued to the media on Thursday, CITU secretary Madan Talukdar said, "In the run-up to the 2014 Lok Sabha election the BJP did assure the people of the country that it, if voted to power, would provide jobs at the rate of two crore people yearly. Toeing the same line, in the run-up to the Assam Assembly election in 2016, the party did assure the people of the State of providing jobs to two lakh people yearly. However, after coming to power the governments at the Centre and in the State failed to keep their promises.

"In 2016, the number of registered unemployed in the State was 16 lakh that rose to 20 lakh till December 31, 2018. This is apart from the youths who have returned to the State after losing their jobs during the corona-induced the lockdown."
