Legal Metrology merged with Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Assam

GUWAHATI: The State Government has merged the office of the Controller of Legal Metrology (CLM) with the Directorate of Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs for smooth, coordinated, and effective functioning. The merger led to the renaming of the two departments as the Commissioner of Food, Civil Supplies, Consumer Affairs, and Legal Metrology.

The Department of Administrative Reforms, Training, Pensions, and Public Grievances issued an official notification in connection with the merger and the renaming. Despite almost similar works, the two departments worked on their own without any cooperation between them. That led the state government to merge them.

According to the official notification, The government merged the Office of the Controller of Legal Metrology (CLM) with the Directorate of Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs under a common commissionerate under the administrative control of the Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs (FCS & CA) Department, and henceforth one officer in the rank of Additional Secretary/Joint Secretary, Government of Assam, will be designated as Commissioner, Food, Civil Supplies, Consumer Affairs, and Legal Metrology (FCSCA & LM), and all the powers that are now enjoyed by the Directorate of Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs and the Controller of Legal Metrology will be vested in The present post of Director, Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs (FCS&CA) will be accordingly upgraded, and a new post of Additional Commissioner of Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs at the rank of Deputy Secretary will be created. All other posts of the present Director, Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs (FCS&CA) with the designation of Additional Director, Joint Director, or Deputy Director will be renamed as Joint Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner, Assistant Commissioner, etc., at appropriate levels in the proposed commissionerate.

Consequent upon this merger, the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) currently in charge of the FCS&CA Branch will be designated as ADC (FCS&CA and LM) for regular monitoring of the day-to-day works management of the works of Legal Metrology and Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs under the supervision of the office of the Deputy Commissioner.
