My elder brother, Dr. Lekhan Chandra Borgohain, a retired professor of Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh, who left for his heavenly abode on Jan 3, 2025, was born to an illustrious family of Dhakuakhana in the North Lakhimpur district to Late Numali Borgohain and Late Chandradhar Borgohain. After completing his school education in Dhakuakhana and Dibrugarh, he passed the I. Sc. examination of Gauhati University from Cotton College with brilliant academic performance. He then enrolled in the Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh, in the year 1957 and obtained his MBBS degree in the year 1962. After a brief spell of service at a state dispensary near our home, in 1965 he went to New Delhi and obtained his MS degree from the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences.
Returning from New Delhi, he joined the Anatomy Department of Assam Medical College as an assistant professor and continued his teaching there uninterrupted till his retirement as a distinguished professor in the year 1993. As an exemplary, dedicated teacher with a vast knowledge of the subject and with a brilliant and charismatic approach to teaching, he could earn love, respect, and admiration not only from his students but also from his friends and colleagues of other departments of the college.
An extraordinarily simple, amiable, kindhearted, and caring man, my elder brother, with whom I shared all my joys and sorrows during my childhood days, was also an incredible son, husband, father, and brother in his family. He worked tirelessly to raise his three children, providing not only a good education but also instilling values of honesty, integrity, and hard work. True to the tradition set by our illustrious father, he was a devotee of Srimanta Sankardev's 'Naam Dharma' and used to visit the local Naamghar and attend other religious functions regularly. With his simplicity, honesty, compassion, and purity of heart, and with his smiling face, my brother could earn a huge number of friends and relatives around him, who loved and respected him and cherished his company immensely.
Today, on 13th January, on this day of his Adhya Shraddha, I pray to the almighty for the eternal peace of the departed soul.
Pabitra Borgohain
