Lest we forget: Guwahati pays rich tributes to martyrs of anti-CAA stir

Guwahati: Members of student organisations and civil society in Guwahati paid rich tributes to the martyrs of the anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) movement of 2019 on their first death anniversary on Saturday. A tribute ceremony was organised at Hatigaon High School in the city in this regard. They lit earthen lamps in front of the portraits of martyrs Sam Stafford, Dipanjal Das, Ishwar Nayak, Abdul Alim and Dwijendra Panging, who lost their lives during the protests last year.

The ceremony was also attended by AASU adviser Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya, president Dipanka Kumar Nath, general secretary Sankor Jyoti Baruah and artiste Barsha Rani Bishaya, besides hundreds of students.

On December 11, 2019, the anti-CAA protests turned violent across Assam after the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 was passed in Rajya Sabha despite widespread protests across the Northeast region. However, the protests were stopped because of the novel coronavirus outbreak in March this year. The protesters have been continuously stating that they will keep on agitating until and unless the government repeals the Act.

Meanwhile, Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Akhil Gogoi on Friday, while speaking to the media during his visit to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, once again urged the people of Assam to come forward and continue their fight against the draconian law.

Earlier this month, singer Zubeen Garg also stated that he would continue his fight and protest against the Act. He said if CAA is implemented in the state, he will come out to protest against it again.
