Lift Internet ban or we’ll file Public Interest Litigation in Gauhati High Court: AALA

Lawyers to stage Raj Bhawan Challo on Wednesday

GUWAHATI: The AALA (All Assam Lawyers’ Association) has threatened the State government that it will move the Gauhati High Court with a PIL (Public Interest Litigation) on Wednesday if the State administration does not normalize the internet services in the State by Tuesday.

In a statement issued to the media on Monday, AALA president David Ledger said, “We’re going to stage a Raj Bhawan Challo agitation in Guwahati on December 20, 2019, against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. In the districts and sub-divisions, our members will take out processions in their respective areas against the Act. We’ll send memoranda to the President of India through the Governor from Guwahati and through the deputy commissioners and sub-divisional officers from districts and sub-divisions respectively.”

AALA general secretary Dipak Kumar Das said, “The police firing on innocent protestors has exposed the government’s atrocities on people. We’ve already filed a petition against the CAA in the Supreme Court of India that is going to hear the case tomorrow.”

Meanwhile, addressing the media in Guwahati on Monday, Lawyers’ Association, Guwahati (LAG) president Biraj Kumar Choudhary said, “We’re going to support the AALA’s Raj Bhawan Challo agitation on December 20. We’ll also send our memorandum to the President of India against the CAA through the Governor. Since its inception, the LAG has been raising its voice as and when the interest of the people of Assam is hampered. We’re going to take all necessary agitational programmes for the cancellation of the CAA. We had our special general meeting today when the decision to take part in the peaceful and democratic agitation in the State was taken.”

The LAG also made an appeal to all people to desist from anything that may derail the peaceful and democratic agitation against the Act.

The LAG condoled the death of youths during the agitation against the CAA.
