Missing Youth From Assam Rescued In Srinagar!

Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI: Suraj Jamal, a youth who was lured away from Assam by a tout with the promise of offering him job, has been located somewhere in Jammu & Kashmir. Jamal, along with a girl, is now in a police station in Srinagar. Even as the possibility of involvement of fundamentalists looms large in the episode, yet the investigation at this stage is not ripe to pinpoint anything like that.

Suraj Jamal of Medhipara in the Garigaon area in Guwahati under Jalukbari outpost went missing on June 14. His family members had no clues as to where he had gone. He went missing without letting anyone in the family know his plan. After a few days, Jamal’s family members received a call from him. He only said that he had gone for a job, and that he was well. On June 21 he telephoned his mother again and said that he had reached Delhi. He requested his mother to deposit money in his bank account.

While talking with his family members over telephone on that day, Jamal, it seems, didn’t know that “all was not well with him”. This came to the fore only on June 23 when he telephoned his parents again and informed them that he was being taken to Jammu & Kashmir. He further let his parents know that he was not aware of the person/persons taking him to Jammu & Kashmir and for what purpose.

The conversation over the mobile phone with Jamal let his mother know that her son might have been at the clutch of some wrong hands, and that her son had already got the jitters. In the conversation on the mobile phone with Jamal, his family members came to know that there were a few more boys from upper Assam along with Jamal. They were all being taken to Jammu & Kashmir against their will. The boys let the family members of Jamal know that “they’re not allowed to get alighted from the vehicle and not told where they’re being taken, and why”. After June 23, no contract with the boys could be established.

The scared parents of Jamal lodged an FIR at Jalukbari police station on June 24 regarding the missing of Jamal. A case (951/19) was registered in that connection.

Meanwhile, talking to the media Guwahati Police Commissioner Deepak Kumar said: “We contacted the Jammu & Kashmir Police. They have located Suraj Jamal somewhere in Srinagar. Now Jamal is in a police station there. He’s accompanied by a girl. A video footage sent from there shows Jamal as saying that he went for job, and now he’s willing to come back home.” Kumar further said: “We’ll talk to Jamal after his arrival. If he says that more Assam youths are there, and if they’re really in trouble, we’ll take their addresses, besides taking up the issue with Jammu & Kashmir police and civil administrations.”
