GUWAHATI: With crimes against women rising in the State and the nation, the Assam Police is coming up with a force – Mulagabhoru Brigade – that can hold the bull (the menace) by the horns.

Talking to the media here on Sunday, DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said, "It's a part of our modernization plan to ensure women's safety. We're experimenting on this plan, and we may formally come up with the plan within a month.

"We're also experimenting on an App that will have to be installed by all women in their mobile handsets for their safety. When a woman in distress screams her mobile App will cause a direct call to 112 toll-free number of the police. Even if the woman presses the button of her mobile handset thrice the same call will come to the police's 112 number. Receiving such a call, a rescue team of the police will locate and rescue her."

Besides women police personnel, Mulaghaboru will also have civilian women who can join it voluntarily. The motto of this force is to provide a security shield to women in society that, more often than not, look the other way when women are assaulted in public or in their vicinity. Bystander apathy is a common phenomenon among most of the people in society. They just play the role of mute spectators when someone is being meted out with injustice in front of them.
