GUWAHATI: BJP Assam Pradesh president and Member of Parliament Dilip Saikia has called for the naming of two major long-distance rail routes - Guwahati-Delhi-Guwahati and Guwahati-Chennai-Guwahati - after the two great personalities of Assam, Srimanta Sankardev and Srimanta Madhabdev. He raised this demand while participating in a debate in Parliament regarding the approval of the Railway Ministry's demands for the fiscal year 2025-26.

During the debate, MP Dilip Saikia, representing the Darrang-Odalguri constituency, highlighted the lack of rail connectivity, the need for new rail services, and the resumption of closed rail stops in various stations in his constituency. He further mentioned that the Darrang district still lacks rail connectivity, which has caused inconvenience for the local population in terms of transportation.

Saikia had previously raised this issue through personal meetings, parliamentary discussions, and letters to the railway minister. He urged the central government to take immediate action on this matter.

He reiterated the need for the resumption of various rail stops that were closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially at stations like Kheirabari, Dekargaon, Goreswar, Majbat, Tangla, and Udalguri, as restoring these stops would greatly benefit the local population. Notably, Saikia also demanded the introduction of the Vande Bharat Express on the Dibrugarh-Guwahati rail route via Rangiya and Odalguri. This high-speed train would provide better services and create a new travel option for passengers in the northeastern region. To improve transportation facilities, he also emphasised the need for a new rail service between Guwahati and Jagdalpur (Odisha). If this service is introduced, it would strengthen the Assam-Odisha connection and reduce travel difficulties for the people of the Odisha community in Assam.
