National online workshop on pharmacovigilance held at NIPER

GUWAHATI: Union Minister of State (Chemicals & Fertilizers) Bhagwant Khuba inaugurated a two-day national online workshop on pharmacovigilance at the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) here, which concluded on Tuesday.

The workshop was conducted by the Department of Pharmacy Practice on the occasion of the National Pharmacovigilance Week celebration by the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission, Ghaziabad, and Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebration by the Government of India.

During his address, the Union Minister highlighted the importance of pharmacovigilance in the healthcare system and mentioned that it is vital to safeguard the health of the population by ensuring that the benefits of the use of medicine outweigh the risks associated with the medicine use. He further appreciated the efforts of NIPER Guwahati for taking active initiatives in making professionals and people aware of the subject.

Prof. YK Gupta, president of AIIMS Bhopal & AIIMS Jammu, during his keynote address, mentioned the changing scenario of Pharmacovigilance in India and opined that it needs to be further improved to the level of genomics to identify the adverse reactions of medications in the early stage to prevent them.

While highlighting the international developments on Pharmacovigilance, Sten Olsson, Past President, International Society of Pharmacovigilance, Sweden, appreciated the contribution of India towards developing the global medication safety data.

Dr Jai Prakash, Senior Principal Scientific Officer, Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission, stressed the importance of celebrating the National Pharmacovigilance Week by the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission, and how it was going to achieve the vision and mission of the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India.

Earlier, Dr USN Murty, Director, NIPER Guwahati, welcomed the gathering to the workshop which witnessed nearly 3,200 participants attended virtually from all over the globe.
