Guwahati: In a coordinated eviction drive on Thursday, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) removed 17 unauthorized structures constructed on railway land between the Panikhaiti and Narengi section in Guwahati.
The operation, which commenced at around 11 am and continued till 5 pm, was carried out with the assistance of a 64-member security team. The team comprised personnel from the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Railway Protection Special Force (RPSF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Assam Police, and NFR officials.
According to NFR authorities, the encroachments had persisted for years despite multiple notices issued to the occupants over the past two years. “They were given ample time to vacate the premises, but the illegal occupation continued. Hence, the eviction was carried out as planned,” said an official involved in the operation.
The drive resulted in the complete demolition of eight kutcha houses, while nine other unauthorized structures were partially removed. Most of the evicted structures were makeshift dwellings or unapproved extensions encroaching on railway property.
The NFR stated that the eviction is part of a broader initiative aimed at reclaiming encroached land for critical infrastructure development and ensuring safety along active railway lines. “Clearing these areas is essential for future expansion works and maintaining safety standards. Similar operations will continue in the near future,” the official added.
Local law enforcement agencies ensured that the eviction was conducted peacefully, with no reports of violence or resistance from the affected individuals. The NFR has been undertaking similar eviction drives across its jurisdiction to free up land for projects such as track doubling, station redevelopment, and safety enhancement measures.
