GUWAHATI: Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) commissioned 23.7 MWp of solar power capacity between January and July 2026, the highest among all zonal railways of Indian Railways.

With the addition, NFR’s total installed solar capacity reached 42.1 MWp by July 2026, since it began its solarisation initiative in 2011.

Lumding Division, including the Guwahati portion, recorded the highest cumulative solar installation at 17.7 MWp, followed by Rangiya Division with 9.6 MWp. Alipurduar, Katihar and Tinsukia divisions also contributed to the expansion.

During 2025-26, NFR generated around 114 lakh units of solar power, saving approximately Rs 8.6 crore. In 2024-25, it generated around 60 lakh units and saved about Rs 4.4 crore.

NFR also had another 9 MWp of solar capacity under various stages of implementation across its divisions, with major installations planned in Lumding, Rangiya, Katihar and Alipurduar.

The railway said the initiatives would help reduce carbon emissions, lower energy costs and support Indian Railways’ goal of becoming a net-zero carbon emitter, a press release said.
