Northeast to receive enhanced Southwest monsoon rainfall

GUWAHATI: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Borjhar has predicted that the north-eastern States, including Assam, would receive enhanced Southwest monsoon rainfall for the next five days.

"Light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall will be experienced by Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura from August 22 to August 26. The monsoon trough is passing through the region. Moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal is likely to increase over the north-eastern region due to strong southwesterly winds in the lower levels," a RMC official said.

Since June 1 this year, Assam has received 829.2 mm rainfall against the normal of 1044.7 mm, which is 21 per cent less than normal rainfall. Deficit rainfall has hit 12 districts of the State. Neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh has also recorded deficit rainfall in 12 of the 16 districts. In one district in Arunachal Pradesh, monsoon rainfall has been "largely deficient".

Southwest monsoon had arrived in the Northeast on June 6 this year. The RMC said the monsoon will withdraw by mid-October. Even though the Indian Meteorological Department has predicted a normal monsoon rainfall in most parts of the country, but in case of the Northeast, it has predicted a below-normal monsoon.
