Offsetting Killing of Vultures By Planting Saplings!

GUWAHATI: Destroying biodiversity is no laughing matter! In a rare of the rarest ruling, the Gauhati High Court has added a condition for granting the bail of an accused that he (the accused) has to plant 25 saplings to offset his alleged killing some vultures. Dhanapati Das has a case {64/2019 under Section 429 IPC read with Section 51(a) of the Wildlife (Protection) Act} filed in Kamalpur police station in Kamrup district for allegedly killing some vultures by poisoning. Dhanapati hails from village Sonapur in Kamrup district. He moved the High Court seeking his bail. In its recent ruling, the High Court granted Das bail. Along with other conditions for the bail, the High Court, however, added a condition that Das will have to plant as many as 25 saplings at a place to be identified by the DFO in Northern Range in Hajo purportedly to offset his killing of vultures.
