GUWAHATI: The opposition political parties in Assam, including the Congress, got into a huddle at Pragjyoti ITA Centre, Machkhowa, here today and laid stress on putting up a united fight to defeat the BJP in the 2026 Assam Assembly election.

Most of the opposition took part in the Assam United Citizens Convention in the presence of Dr. Hiren Gohain, MP Ajit Kumar Bhuyan, and others.

Taking part at the convention, APCC president Gaurav Gogoi said, “We will talk to all and hear their views while taking political decisions. We’ll also talk to all in matters relating to the 2026 Assembly election. We’ve already started talks with a few political leaders. We’re trying to delve deep into the reasons for which understanding eluded the opposition parties in the 2021 Assembly election in Assam. Had the opposition been united in 2021, we would have formed the government at Dispur. We don’t want to repeat the mistakes of 2021. We want to proceed with strategies. I declare that the Congress won’t go it alone in the 2026 Assembly election.”

Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi said, “The people of the state want a united Opposition to defeat the BJP in the next Assembly election. Even today’s convention has proved it. We need to be united since the people of the state want it. It is the call of the time.”

Raijor Dal president and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi said, “The people of the state are waiting for a united opposition for the 2026 Assembly election. We’re waiting for the Congress to utter a united fight against the BJP. We’re thinking of the number of seats. We’ll fight the poll together, no matter if we get two or 25 seats.”

Social worker and public activist Yogendra Yadav also took part in the convention. He wrote on his social media handle, “Was privileged to be part of the Assam United Citizens Convention in Guwahati today. Civil society organizations joined hands with leaders of all major opposition parties to resolve in favour of a united fight against the anti-people BJP regime. So, the coming election won’t just be BJP vs. Congress or BJP vs. the united opposition. It promises to be BJP vs. the people of Assam.”
