Guwahati: Assam's Minister for Panchayat and Rural Development, Ranjeet Kumar Dass, on Tuesday inaugurated a comprehensive training programme for newly elected presidents of Gaon Panchayats at the Madhavdev Auditorium of the Golap Borbora State Institute of Panchayat & Rural Development (SIPRD) in Khanapara, Guwahati.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Dass urged the newly elected representatives to serve the rural population with sensitivity, responsibility, and dedication. He emphasized that Panchayat leaders must go beyond personal interests and work closely with the people to ensure transparency and good governance at the grassroots level.

On the occasion, the Minister also released a special handbook designed to help Panchayat representatives better understand their roles and responsibilities and effectively implement rural development schemes.

The training programme aims to equip a total of 2,192 gaon panchayat presidents, 364 anchalik panchayat presidents and vice-presidents, and 397 zila parishad members in a phased manner. The sessions will be conducted at SIPRD's Khanapara and Kahikuchi campuses. Additionally, 1,828 members of anchalik panchayats and 19,728 members of Gaon Panchayats will receive training at decentralized centres and Zila Panchayat Resource Centres across districts.

As part of this initiative, a five-day training programme for 75 newly elected gaon panchayat presidents from Sonitpur district also began today. The training sessions for all representatives are expected to continue in phases until the first week of December. Highlighting the growing use of digital platforms in scheme implementation, Minister Dass encouraged Panchayat leaders to become digitally literate and adapt to evolving governance practices.

He also outlined the achievements of the Panchayat and Rural Development Department over the past four years and spoke about various welfare schemes launched by the Central and State Governments for the benefit of the rural poor.
