Peace eludes curfew-clamped Guwahati city

GUWAHATI: Curfew-clamped Guwahati is still burning with agitators making forays into to the highways to register their protests. The city looks like e burning with ‘fire pits’ seen on most of its roads and lanes.

Daring the curfew, people were seen to demonstrate in various areas in the city, including Basistha, Lalmati, Lalung Gaon, Chachal, Hengrabari, Six Mile, Downtown, Rukminigaon, Ulubari, Zoo Road, Gauhati Club, Chandmari, Uzan Bazar, Dighalipukhuripar, Kamakhya Gate, Adabari, Satmile, Dharapur, various places near the NH-37 etc. With the agitators blocking roads, security personnel were seen to lathi-charge on them, besides shelling teargas, firing rubber bullets and firing in the air. Many people were injured in the city, including two at Uzan Bazar. A girl had to be admitted to the hospital.

Most of the decorations on the dividers of roads have been torched by a section of agitators who have been on a breaking and burning spree.
