Peaceful Conclusion of Vijaya Dashami in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: Devotees thronged the puja mandaps to celebrate Vijaya Dashami, the last day of Durga puja on Tuesday. They recited mantras and offered flowers to the goddess Durga (pushpanjali) and prayed for her blessings.

Thousands of people thronged the ghats to observe the final phase of the festival — the immersion of the goddess Durga. A total of 349 visarjans (immersion ritual) were done at Kasoumari ghat and this year, 34 at Jaipur ghat, 40 at Pandu ghat on Tuesday and 50 on Wednesday, 76 at Saokuchi ghat, 15 at Basistha ghat, 31 at Sonapur ghat, 26 at Chandrapur ghat and 17 at Azara ghat. According to officials, this year, the visarjan ceremony was conducted smoothly without any mishaps or confusion. In most of the ghats, the ceremony went on till the wee hours of Wednesday morning sans the hassle. Entrusted with the responsibility, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) cleaned up the ghats as soon as the various mandaps finished with the rituals. In view of the anti-plastic drive, the devotees separately discarded the plastic ornaments on the goddess before immersing her.
