GUWAHATI: Despite the surging COVID-19 cases across the State, a section of people in Guwahati are ignoring the safety protocols to keep the dreaded virus at bay. The resurgence of the virus has led the Kamrup Metro District Administration to take various steps including the formation of a task force under the direction of the District Disaster Management Authority.

The task force will ensure that the COVID-19 protocols are being followed by the people in public places. It will also impose a fine of Rs 1,000 to the non-abiding persons for violating the COVID-19 protocols. The task force has been constituted with officials from the district administration, GMC (Guwahati Municipal Corporation), and Guwahati Police.

Despite such initiatives from the district administration to contain the spread, some people of the city are openly violating the protocols. In most public places, people can be seen roaming without wearing masks and ignoring the social distancing norms.

In this regard, DGP (Director General of Police) Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta took to his Twitter handle and stated, "We are emphasizing on creating a task force with concerned departments like DDMA and Municipal Corporations for making masks mandatory in public places. But this cannot be done successfully without the cooperation and commitment from each one of us."
