Persons with Disabilities, Assam demand rest house, university

GUWAHATI: The Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) of Assam on Sunday demanded the setting up of a university and a rest house for them. They have alleged that the establishment of a university for them has not been started as yet because of the negligence of the State Government.

Reacting to the State government’s announcement of land allotment to a Non-Government Organization for establishing a rest house for the specially-able people, the Pratibandhi Suroksha Sanstha, Assam said that before announcing any new fund for the PwDs the government must implement its promise for constructing a rest house for PwDs earlier in 2018.

Addressing a press conference at Guwahati Press Club on Sunday secretary of Pratibandhi Suraksha Sanstha, Assam (PSSA) Nripen Malakar said, “We don’t have any issue of government allotting funds and land for any kind of welfare of the PwDs under NGOs. Our demand is only to implement the promise that the government had made to us before two years. We fear that after the completion of rest house for the PwDs under an NGO, the government will turn back and say that it has already allotted money for the same purpose.”

The PSSA Secretary also alleged that it is not the Central government for whom the establishment of a university for the PwDs has not yet completed, but it is the negligence of the State Government. Malakar further claimed that the Chief Minister of Assam is lying to the people of Assam when he said that PwDs have been recruited in a total of 663 posts under the State government. He said that it is a complete lie. The government started the procedure of appointment of 354 posts for PwDs and only 352 have recruited, he added.
