GUWAHATI: A resident of Aadhar Satra village in Golaghat named Putukon Bora (49) sought help from the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam for his son’s physical disability, and the CM, in a response, immediately referred him to Bengaluru through Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for advanced treatment. After proper diagnosis and necessary intervention, doctors in Bengaluru referred their son to Mobility India, a national-level organization working in the fields of disability and rehabilitation since 1994. After coming back from Bengaluru, GMCH made necessary arrangements for their visit to the centre.

Accordingly, after assessment, Putukon Bora received a customized wheelchair for his son through Mobility India (MI). Thanking the Chief Minister of Assam for his assistance, Putukon Bora said, “People need not travel to Bengaluru or Delhi for aids and appliances anymore when best facilities are available in Assam itself.”

During our interaction with the Development Officer of Mobility India Robi Kishore Dutta said, “Disability is widespread across India, and the scenario is quite grim in the north-eastern states, including Assam. Disability and Rehabilitation services are inadequate in terms of quality, coverage, and awareness.”

In the past 5 years, more than 500 persons with disabilities have received assistive devices through MI. The organization has bagged both national and state awards in 2014 and 2017 respectively for their contribution in the field of disability and rehabilitation. MI is also the only Prosthetics and Orthotics training centre in India and the SAARC region to be recognized by the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO).
