PIL filed against capping hospital charges for COVID testing & treatment in Assam

GUWAHATI: A Public Interest Litigation has been filed by Advocate Daniyal Khan for capping and regulating of COVID-19 testing and treatment in Assam. Appearing for the petitioner, Senior Advocate Millie Hazarika assisted by Sanjana Newar argued that the prices of COVID test and its treatment thereafter in the State of Assam is one of the highest in the country. Whereas governments in States like New Delhi, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh etc have been regulating the prices of COVID testing but no such steps are taken by the State government in Assam.

The Division Bench heard the matter in detail and has directed the State Health Department to appraise the Court on the next date as to the purchase price of RT-PCR test kits and the rates on which those test are being charged to the public.

The PIL challenges that high unregulated prices are being charged for RT-PCR and Rapid Testing, and COVID treatment by private medical institutions of Assam. It also challenges the additional Rs 2,200 charged by the State government for RT-PCR test results within 24 hours.
