Police Ready To Face Any Challenge In Future: DGP Kuladhar Saikia

GUWAHATI: Director General of Police Kuladhar Saikia said on Sunday that even though the exercise of the NRC update is going on smoothly so far, the Assam Police is ready to face any challenge that might emerge in the coming days.

“If the situation arises, we will seek additional forces,” Kuladhar Saikia told reporters during a function near the Assam Police headquarters here on Sunday. The final NRC will be published on July 31 this year. The NRC, 1951 is being updated taking March 25, 1971 as the cut-off date as per the tripartite agreement signed among the Centre, the State Government and the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) way back on May 5, 2005. It is expected that after updating the NRC, it will become easier to detect illegal Bangladeshi migrants in Assam who had sneaked into the State after March 25, 1971 as per the Assam Accord signed on August 15, 1985 which culminated the historic anti-foreigners’ movement in Assam.

The complete draft NRC enrolled the names of 2, 89,83,677 out of 3, 29,91, 384, applicants. Out of around 40 lakh applicants who were found ineligible to be included in the complete draft published last year, nearly 36 lakh have filed claims for inclusion in the final NRC. Around two lakh objections were also filed against inclusion of “ineligible” persons in the complete draft NRC. The NRC authority is currently conducting hearing of the claims and objections.

Sources said additional forces of the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) deployed during the three-phase Lok Sabha election held in the State recently, have been sent back for re-deployment in other parts of the country.
