GUWAHATI: The Parents Responsibility and Norms for Accountability and Monitoring (PRANAM) Commission held a meeting with the Kamrup (Metro) District Administration along with heads of various departments on Tuesday.

The meeting was held through video conferencing the Office of the Deputy Commissioner where the Pranam Commission held discussions with the heads regarding the PRANAM Act. The commission was set up in 2019 after the Assam Legislative Assembly passed the Parents Responsibility and Norms for Accountability and Monitoring (PRANAM) Bill. It was the first-of its-kind Bill in the country to protect elderly parents of the government employees in their times of need.

The PRANAM Act has made it mandatory for State Government employees to look after their parents and unmarried differently-abled siblings who do not have their own sources of income.

As per the Act, if the PRANAM Commission gets a complaint that parents of a State Government employee is being ignored, then 10 or 15 per cent of the employee's salary will be deducted by the government and pay the same amount to the parents or differently-abled siblings.
