GUWAHATI: Professor Chandan Mahanta, a well-known name in the academic field of the region breathed his last on Tuesday at his quarters in the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati at the age of 61.

He was part of the institution since its early days and was pivotal in bringing it to its current position. He was serving as the Dean of Student Affairs as well as the Head of the Department of Civil Engineering at IITG. He was also a part of several research-based projects with his expertise in multiple fields of study.

Professor Mahanta had been suffering from a brain tumour for the last two years and was undergoing medical treatment for the same. Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu also offered his condolences along with the students and staff of the institution. He said on social media site X, “Deeply saddened to learn about the untimely demise of Dr Chandan Mahanta, an eminent Environmental Engineer & Professor of Civil Engineering at IIT Guwahati. His demise leaves a huge void in Assam’s academic sector. Offering my sincere condolences to the bereaved family members and well-wishers in this hour of immense grief and personal loss. May the departed soul attain Sadgati. Om Shanti.”
