Protestors torch stages for Indo-Japan Summit

Business establishments keep shutters down

GUWAHATI: As Union Home Minister tabled the Citizenship Amendment Bill in the Rajya Sabha, people all over the city came out in spontaneously and joined the protest carried out by students’ community in their Dispur Gherao programme.

People protesting against the Bill turned violent when paramilitary forces resorted to teargas shelling and firing rubber bullets. The enraged protesters broke and burnt the stages meant for the proposed Indo-Japan Annual Summit in different parts of the city, including some at Bhangaghar and the Six Mile area. The protesters even broke and burnt the divider railings, including the plastic dividers. Shops and business establishments in Guwahati kept their shutters down in most of the areas in Guwahati, including Ganeshguri, Dispur and Six Mile etc.
