RPF recovers contraband, smuggled goods worth more than Rs. 1.64 crore in three days

Continuing the fight against the transportation of contraband and smuggled goods in trains, the RPF of NFR has recovered contraband goods worth more than Rs. 1.64 crore during the period from August 23 to 25.

GUWAHATI: Continuing the fight against the transportation of contraband and smuggled goods in trains, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) of Northeast Frontier Railway has recovered contraband goods worth more than Rs. 1.64 crore during the period from August 23 to 25. The RPF also apprehended six persons for alleged involvement in the transportation of contraband or smuggled goods during this period.

In a recent incident on August 25, the RPF of Dimapur conducted checking at Dimapur Railway Station. During checking, they detected one unclaimed bag and recovered 550 gram of brown sugar worth about Rs. 1.10 crore, which were concealed in 50 soap cases. Later, the recovered brown sugar was handed over to OC/GRP/Dimapur for disposal. In an incident on August 24, the RPF and GRP of Agartala conducted checking of train No. 13173 UP (Kanchanjungha Express) at Agartala railway station. During checking, they apprehended three persons and recovered 788 bottles of cough syrup, valued at Rs. 1.38 lakh (approx.) from the train. Later, the apprehended persons, along with the recovered cough syrup, were handed over to OC/GRP/Agartala for necessary legal action.

Moreover, in different drives and checks conducted on August 23 and 24, RPF of N. F. Railway recovered 10,200 kg of areca nuts worth Rs. 51 lakh (approx.), 936 bottles of cough syrup worth Rs. 1.64 lakh (approx. ), and 48 bottles of liquor worth approx. Rs. 7440.00 from different trains and stations. Three people were also apprehended on August 23 for illegal possession of cough syrup. Later, recovered contraband and apprehended persons were handed over to the concerned department for further legal action.

It may be mentioned here that RPF of N. F. Railway has detected 434 cases of illegal carrying of contraband/smuggled goods during the period from January to July, 2023 and recovered contraband/smuggled goods worth more than Rs. 13.36 crore. During this period, the RPF also apprehended 250 people for illegally carrying contraband or smuggled goods, stated a press release.
