Rural Women Upliftment Association Organized Street plays on green Diwali

GUWAHATI: The Rural Women Upliftment Association of Assam organized a series of street plays in different parts of the city like Supermarket, Sixmile, Beltola Market , Silpukhuri market etc to celebrate “Harit Diwali-Swasth Diwali” sponsored by MoEF & CC, GOl & supported by ASTEC, G0A on Thursday, with an objective to create awareness and sensitize the community to minimize excessive bursting of crackers during Diwali which causes health hazards & adverse environmental conditions, especially pollution having serious impacts on health of children, aged people and people suffering from respiratory ailments as airborne pollution has been rising above safe limits during winter in many cities.

As per a press release, a total number of 20 students from Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva Viswavidyalaya, NERIM, Downtown University performed in the play and it was directed by Dr. Simon Bordoloi, Executive Director, RWUAA. Leaflets were also distributed among the people.

The importance of role of people and their contribution towards reducing pollution by not bursting harmful fire crackers during Diwali is conveyed during the street plays. The gathering was appealed to buy earthen lamps and other such environment-friendly products, The play was concluded by a pledge for a Green and Healthy Diwali to the gathering with the hope that the message of celebrating “Harit & Swasth Diwali” will be taken across the city.
