GUWAHATI: The State Bank of India (SBI) will launch a spot Aadhaar enrollment drive during its three-day-long Financial Inclusion Outreach Initiative for North East starting in the city from February 26.

The drive is aimed at increasing the number of SBI and other banks’ customers to link Aadhaar with their accounts. The Financial Inclusion Outreach Initiative will be held at the playground of the College of Veterinary Science at Khanapara from February 26 to 28. Union Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman will attend the event on February 27.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday morning Chief General Manager of SBI, North Eastern Circle Sunil Kumar Tandon said there will be 10 Aadhaar enrollment booths at Financial Inclusion Outreach Initiative event. He said the booths will conduct the enrollment drive from 11 am to 6 pm during all the three days of the event.

“We request the people to visit the Financial Inclusion Outreach Initiative event with necessary documents so that they could enroll themselves in Aadhaar exercise besides availing other facilities available in the event,” Tandon said.

Those left out from enrollment during the event will get the opportunity to get enrolled in Aadhaar at SBI branches later. During the event customers who already have their Aadhaar numbers can link the same with their bank accounts.

Aadhaar number is a 12-digit random number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UDAI) to the residents of India after satisfying the verification process laid down by the Authority. Any individual, irrespective of age and gender, who is a resident of India, may voluntarily enroll to obtain Aadhaar number. Assam is still lagging behind in Aadhaar enrollment.

Tandon also urged the SBI customers to update their KYC (Know Your Customer) as soon as they receive notices from the bank. He said customers who do not update their KYC, may face partial freezing of their accounts. During the partial freezing, customers cannot withdraw money from their accounts. Deposits in such accounts will continue.

On other hands the SBI has taken up a project to bring the tea tribes community in Assam under financial inclusion ambit by connecting the tea gardens through the satellite communication system to make banking services available in remote locations where conventional communication system has not yet reached.
