GUWAHATI: The Assam State Committee of the Students Federation of India (SFI) organised a Chatra Samabesh on Saturday with the aim of protecting the public sector schools of the state. They mentioned that the state is gradually neglecting the public sector schools, which is reflected in the failure of the concerned organisation to conduct one exam properly.

The members of SFI mentioned that 2979 schools are currently operated by a single teacher with vacant posts, and the state faces a shortage of 23784 teachers in schools across the state. They put forward several demands to the Assam Governor and Chief Minister via a memorandum.

Some of the demands put forward by the SFI members are: filling the empty teacher posts in all schools while developing the infrastructure of government schools; developing SEBA and AHSEC; developing the infrastructure of all schools in the tea garden areas and filling vacant positions; option for instruction in the Bodo language in all institutions under Bodoland University; provincialization of all venture schools; appointment of additional teachers for higher secondary schools; and the development of the infrastructure of the polytechnics along with the appointment of additional teachers. The participants also mentioned that there is no proper communication route to the Badalpara Tea Estate in the Udalguri district, meaning that students have to undertake risky journeys on boats every day to go to school. Mentioning that two people had died trying to cover the same route, they demanded that a bridge be constructed soon over the river for the people of the tea garden.

They also mentioned that the Sangsua Tea Garden Higher Secondary School has a good number of students, but it has not been recognised by the government. The SFI members mentioned that there are no other government schools near that location, leaving no other option for the local students. So they demanded that the Sangsua Tea Garden Higher Secondary School be converted to a government school and that arrangements be made to ensure that the school gets the proper number of teachers for all necessary subjects.
