GUWAHATI: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has demanded that Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal should step down so as to pave the way for a clean inquiry into the SI recruitment scam by a sitting judge of the Gauhati High Court.

APCC president Ripun Bora raised this demand at a joint press conference at Guwahati Press Club here on Thursday. Others present at the press meet were leaders of the Anchalik Gana Morcha, CPI and the CPI(ML).

Bora said, "Leakage of recruitment examination question papers has been a long RSS-BJP modus operandi to have a good grip on the State administration. The mock examination a day before the SI examination was held not only at Hotel Thank You. It was held at various places in the State.

"So long Sonowal is in power, how come an investigation agency dares to go for a clean inquiry against him? He should step down and pave the way for clean investigation into the scam by a sitting judge of the High Court. Most of the examinations conducted by the BJP government were not free from anomalies, and in most of them the results couldn't be declared."

Ajit Kumar Bhuyan, who was also present at the press meet, questioned, "If Diban Deka was not a BJP member, why has the party suspended him today? The BJP did assure the tea estate labourers of paying them daily wage of Rs 351 soon after coming to power. However, the tenure of the BJP-led government is going to expire, but the garden labourers are getting a daily wage of Rs 194 only."

Munin Mahanta of the CPI said, "The Prime Minister said that the passage of the Farmers' Bills would make the farmers independent. The fact remains that the Bills will make the farmers servants."
