Sikshakarmis in education department cry for job regularization

GUWAHATI: Jyotikendra Sikshakarmi Santha (Assam) (JSSA) has raised the demand that the government should absorb all shiksha karmis in the Education department with dignity.

Talking to the media here on Saturday, JSSA president Munmun Chetia said, "We've been working as shikshakarmis since 2003 with a meagre salary of Rs 6,500 per month. As many as 815 sikshakarmis have been working in 527 Jyotikendras in the State. The number of students in these institutions is over 25,000. For the past 18 years we've been demanding regularization of our jobs, but to no avail. The government did assure us of regularizing our jobs but did precious little towards that end. On July 19, 2019 then Education Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharjee did order a special TET for Shikshakarmis. Around 355 sikshakarmis did acquire D.El.Ed degree to be eligible for TET. However, even now the SSA (Sarba Siksha Abhiyan) has not been able to hold TET for sikshakarmis. Of late, we had a discussion with present Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He also assured us of regularization of jobs, but to no avail. We want a clear-cut picture of our future by this month so as to relieve us from the mental agony we have been under. Either appoint us as regular teachers, or hold special TET for us or appoint us in other posts in the department based on our qualifications."
