GUWAHATI: To identify vehicles that break traffic rules in Guwahati, radar based speed enforcement cameras will be used.

The decision to install these cameras was taken at a Kamrup Metro District Road Safety Committee meeting chaired by Kamrup Metro Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu. The meeting discussed about the measures to curb the rising cases of accidents in the city and was attended by representatives of District Administration, Police, Transport Department, LokNirmanBibhag (Road), NHAI, GMC, and GMD.

The suggestion to install radar based speed enforcement cameras was given by Kamrup Metro DTO Gautam Das while discussing measures to nab people who break traffic rules.

DC Pegu agreed to Das' suggestion and directed him to conduct a survey and make a detailed plan for the installation of the cameras.

The DC has directed the Crash Investigation Team (CIT) to visit the accident prone areas to identify the reasons behind the incidents.

It was highlighted in the meeting that from January to November, 2020 a total of 615 road accidents has occurred in the city in which 189 people have lost their lives.

The DC expressed concern over the surge in accident cases and said it is a very serious issue. He asked the CIT to submit a recommendation report on the steps to curb the accidents. DC Pegu also directed the departments to implement the recommendations submitted by the CIT.

He also expressed the need to make the CIT strong and talked about the inclusion of officials from Police, Transport, LokNirman, GMC, and GDD. He ordered the police and transport officials to identify people who drive in a drunken state and also overspeed their vehicles.

The meeting also discussed initiatives to tackle the traffic situation created e-rickshaws. DC Pegu asked the traffic and GMC officials to identify connecting roads for the commute of the e-rickshaws.
