Guwahati: The state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has extended support to Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma’s directive instructing all District Commissioners to strictly enforce a ban on cow slaughter, as well as the sale and consumption of beef within a five-kilometre radius of temples, Namghars, and other religious institutions.
Addressing the media on Friday, state BJP president Dilip Saikia welcomed the government’s “firm and decisive” stance, citing the recent incidents reported during Eid celebrations in districts such as Dhubri, Hojai, Goalpara, Lakhimpur, and Jorhat. Saikia alleged that individuals of Bangladesh origin had deliberately thrown beef near Hindu religious places in a provocative act, calling the incidents “highly unfortunate and disturbing.”
Saikia further endorsed the CM’s revelation that many of the accused individuals are illegally occupying government lands, including PGR (Permanent Grazing Reserve), VGR (Village Grazing Reserve), and lands designated for tribal communities. He praised the government’s decision to conduct urgent verification of documents of such individuals and initiate legal proceedings against illegal settlers.
