State by-polls peaceful; turnout 75.6%

GUWAHATI: The four Legislative Assembly Constituencies (LACs) of Assam that went to by-polls on Monday registered 75.6 per cent turnout on an average. The by-elections were peaceful with no untoward incident reported from any of the four LACs till the filing of this report.

While Ratabari LAC in Karimganj district registered 74.37 per cent polling, Jania LAC in Barpeta district and Rangapara LAC in Sonitpur district registered heavy turnouts of 79.08 per cent and 77.8 per cent respectively. Sonari in Charaideo district, on the other hand, brought down the average voters’ turnout by registering 71.3 per cent polling. The weather in the LAC was not an agreeable one during the polling.

With the counting of votes slated for October 24, the results are expected on the same day.

Barring Jania that is locked in a triangular contest involving the BJP, the Congress and the AIUDF, the other three LACs are locked in straight contests between the BJP and the Congress. Sonari has only two candidates, one each of the Congress and the BJP. While Jania has nine candidates, Rangapara has five candidates and Ratabari has four.
