GUWAHATI: The North East Minority Students' Union (NEMSU) has raised the demand for survey of Wakf property in Assam and making it free from encroachers.

Addressing the media here, NEMSU president Badrul Islam alleged that a section of people is running businesses and syndicates with Assam Wakf Board property.

"There are 15,800 bigha, 2 kotha and 13 lecha land under the Wakf Board in Assam. The Board also has 197 buildings and two tea gardens in the Barak Valley. The total value of the property of the Board is over Rs 50,000 crore, but bulk of the property is not being used by the Board. Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal did announce that a survey of Wakf Board property will be conducted in the State. However, there has been no such survey as yet," Islam lamented. The NEMSU demanded intervention of the Chief Minister and the Finance Minister in the encroachment of Wakf property. "We want eviction of people encroaching upon Wakf property as was conducted to make Xatra lands free from encroachers," Islam asserted.

He also questioned as to why the Haj Bhawan at Jalukbari in the city has not yet been opened as yet even after its construction. "Despite the construction of Haj Bhawan why are Haj pilgrims accommodated at the Haji Musafir Khana? The Bhawan should be used for the purpose at the earliest," he said, and added: "While fares from Ahmedabad and Mumbai per Haj pilgrim are Rs 3,28,168 and Rs 3,29,279 respectively, a pilgrim from Assam is charged Rs 3,99,273. We demand parity of fares for Haj pilgrims."
