Tale of The Tearing Flag At Gandhi Mandap

GUWAHATI: The 9,600 sq ft National Flag, which stands on a 319.5 ft flag pole at Gandhi Mandap, a memorial for Mahatma Gandhi atop the Sarania Hill is the third tallest in the country after Punjab’s Attari border (360 ft) and Pimpri Chinchwad Bhakti Shakti Chowk, Pune (351 ft). The project was carried forward under Guwahati Smart City Limited through GMDA (Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority). The cost of the project was 2.92 crore inclusive of maintenance for a year from the installation.

However, Dispur’s plan to keep the flag fluttering proudly atop the Gandhi Mnadap has gone awry. The gigantic flag tore a lot of times and was patched back up. This time again the flag could not sustain the ravage of nature.

GMDA CEO Moloy Bora stated, “We have always bought the flags from the Flag Corporation of India and each time, the flag tore. This is rather unfortunate and has resulted in the loss of a huge sum of money. As such, we have imported the flag this time in hopes that the quality is better. Hard winds are the cause of the tears in the flag, as such we will also talk with the Indian Army if they have any advice on precautionary measures to prevent the same from happening again.”
