GUWAHATI: Even seven months after expiry of the terms of the urban civic bodies, holding of elections for the bodies still remain uncertain.

The elections for the urban civic bodies are held after every five years. Going by the rules the elections should have been held in the first part of 2020. The deputy commissioners, SDOs (Civil) and other designated government officials are currently in charge of the civic bodies.

The Assam State Election Commission is now busy to prepare itself to hold the BTC elections. The State government has requested the commission to hold the BTC elections before December 15.

Sources said there is no chance of holding the elections of urban civic bodies in the first part of 2021 as notification to hold the assembly elections in the State will be issued in the first week of March next year.
