The unsung heroes: Fire and Emergency Services, Assam

GUWAHATI: The Fire and Emergency Services, Assam has been playing a major role in the conduction of the sanitization drives across the State.

Since the lockdown started, the workers of are continuously participating in sanitization drives to disinfect the city in a bid to tackle the outbreak of coronavirus.

Talking to The Sentinel, Director of the department, Dr. YK Gautam said that the Fire and Emergency Services along with the local administration is rigorously conducting the sanitization drives. Gautam said that, “In Assam there a total of 140 Fire Stations. Through these stations we are conducting the drives. 150 fire tenders and around 2,500 workers are participating in the drive.”

The director informed that the areas covered during the drives are selected by the District Administration, Local Administration or Local bodies.

“Maximum areas in Guwahati have been covered. Our work is underway since March 24. The materials used for sanitization are provided by the local administration and we are constantly in touch with the State and District administrations. The workers take necessary safety measures; however, we are not using PPE kits”, added Gautam.

Further, he appealed to the public to follow the health advisory issued by the government and stay indoors for everyone’s safety.
