Guwahati: This year the warmer winter in Assam has been ascribed to a number of issues, including the lack of green cover and pollution, according to experts.

On 10 Jan, Guwahati's minimum temperature was 13 degrees Celsius and its maximum temperature was 26 degrees Celsius.

Due to its geographical location, upper Assam has recorded the lowest temperature compared to other regions of the state, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati.

The upper Assam region is surrounded by hills and is located in the foothills of Arunachal Pradesh. The lower Assam region is slightly warmer, whereas Guwahati has had the greatest temperature rise, with a 3 degree Celsius increase in the minimum temperature and a 5 degree Celsius increase in the maximum temperature.

According to the Met, the minimum temperature in upper Assam was about 10-11 degrees Celsius and the maximum temperature was around 24-25 degrees Celsius, with a 0-3 degree Celsius increase in the minimum temperature but no increase in the maximum temperature. The lower Assam region had a minimum temperature of 12-14 degrees Celsius and a maximum temperature of 25-26 degrees Celsius, with the minimum temperature increasing by 0-4 degrees Celsius. The highest temperature remained unchanged.

"There are several factors behind the increase in temperature across the state," Dr Sanjay O'Neill Shaw, deputy director-general of meteorology at the Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati, said. "Rapid decrease in green cover, earth cutting, concretization, and low rainfall are just a few reasons why Assam is experiencing a drastic climate change."He said that high pollution in the capital city is a major contributor to the rise in temperature.

However Regional forecast, Guwhati mentioned in their latest tweet that rainfall is forecasted in some of the districts for the next 5 days and also warned for thunder and lightning in the state.
