Tirap council demand committee moves for inclusion of 136 villages

GUWAHATI: The TADCDC (Tirap Autonomous District Council Demand Committee) has demanded the formation of a council in the nomenclature of 'Tirap Tribal Autonomous District Council' constituting 136 villages. Addressing the media here at the Tribal Guest House in Paltan Bazar area here on Thursday, the working secretary of the organization, Pallab Shyom Wailung said, "We have been carrying on our movement for the creation of the Council. The Council must include the entire 'transferred areas of the Tirap Tribal Belt which is actually notified under the Sixth Scheduled area. This is required to achieve the holistic objective to protect and promote the tribal identity and their cultures as well as customs of the micro-tribes like the Singphoos, Semas, Tangsas, Khamptis, Maan-Maan Tai-speaking Turung Aitons and Khamiyang, inter-alia originally notified as NEFA (North East Frontier Agency), known as the 'Frontier Tribes of NEFA'.

"We met the State Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on June 19. The Chief Minister assured us that the necessary steps will be undertaken to constitute the autonomous district council for us.

"We also met the Minister for Plain Tribes & Other Backward Class, Dr Ranoj Pegu on July 14. During the meeting, we handed over the details of those 136 villages which we want to be included in the Council areas. Of them, 87 hamlets are in the core area, and the remaining ones have been identified as 'Satellite villages'.
