Guwahati: Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu on Monday reiterated the State government’s commitment to transparent and merit-based recruitment, stating that such initiatives will give a new dimension to the technical education sector in the state.

Speaking at an appointment ceremony held at Janata Bhawan, Dr. Pegu formally handed over appointment letters to 59 Assistant Professors and two Principals of engineering colleges. The appointments are part of an ongoing process through which the Directorate of Technical Education has so far filled 1,210 posts across seven engineering colleges and 26 polytechnic institutes in Assam.

The Minister emphasized that engineering colleges in the state must evolve beyond being centres of textbook learning and instead become hubs for innovation, startups, and the development of skilled human resources. Addressing the newly-appointed faculty members, he said the government has entrusted them with a serious responsibility to uplift the quality of technical institutions.

Dr. Pegu also revealed that to strengthen Model Degree Colleges across Assam, the department has initiated the engagement of experienced retired teachers. However, only those under the age of 65 will be considered eligible. The aim is to combine the energy of new appointees with the wisdom of experienced faculty to enhance academic standards.

Highlighting the advent of the Industrial Revolution 5.0, the Minister stressed the need for multidisciplinary learning centres. He announced that plans are underway to introduce technical diploma courses in both engineering colleges and science degree colleges to better prepare students for future industry demands. The event was attended by Education Department Secretary Narayan Konwar and Director of Technical Education Dhruvajyoti Bora, among other dignitaries.
