GUWAHATI: Noted choreographer Uday Shankar has decided to return the Best Choreography Award which he bagged for his choreography in two Assamese films – Jibon Bator Logori and Bakor Putek – to the State government as a mark of protest against the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act).
Talking to The Sentinel on Sunday, the choreographer said, “As an activist, I’ve devoted my life to the uplift of the Assamese culture. What’s the use of such awards when our own tongue is on the verge of extinction on our own land? The best choreography award for Jibon Bator Logori and Bakor Putek is the most prestigious amongst the awards which I’ve received in my career as an artist. There’s no use of keeping such awards adorning my drawing-room when my own tongue is moribund. What I’m today is because of my works in language and culture. By Tuesday I’ll go to the department to know as to where and to whom I need to give this award back.”
He further said, “I’m ready to agitate for the survival of my language and culture. Taking such awards from the government against whom we’ve to agitation isn’t right.”
