GUWAHATI: The Bhetapara local fish market in the city has given rise to health concerns. Trading of both local as well as frozen fish (commonly known as salani fish) takes place in the market. The fishes are brought in bulk. A foul smell emanates from the market and this creates an unhyienic and unpleasant atmosphere.

Local people have urged the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) and Guwahati Development Department (GDD) Minister Ashok Singhal to take steps to resolve this issue. Fishes that are traded in Bhetapara come from Morigaon, Hajo, Barpeta, Nalbari while the frozen fish come from West Bengal.

The fishes from West Bengal are brought in thermocol boxes which are non-biodegradable. This, along with the unhealthy ambience caused by the foul smell from the fishes, harms the environment. The Basistha River which flows in the area has also been polluted as garbage from the fish market is thrown in the river.

Though the river water gets cleaned by the GMC, within a year it becomes polluted again. Local people have alleged that drugs trade is also rampant in the area. All these factors have become a cause of concern for the local people, who have urged the autorities concerned to take necessary action to protect the environment and to stop the menace of drugs trade in the area.
