GUWAHATI: Vidyanjali has received an overwhelming response from volunteers in Assam. So far, volunteers have contributed more than 1 lakh ceiling fans and more than 18,000 other items to schools of the State.

Vidyanjali, an initiative by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, is a school volunteer programme aiming to strengthen schools through community and private sector involvement in schools across the country. It provides a platform for alumni, community, NGOs, individuals, professionals, retired teachers and government officials etc., to contribute voluntary services and assets to various schools through the Vidyanjali portal.

The State Government decided to involve alumni of primary and secondary schools and the community as a whole in the maintenance and improvement of the basic amenities of these institutions. A letter was sent by the Mission Director of Samagra Siksha, Assam (SSA), which informed the Deputy Commissioners of all districts of the State, along with the Principal Secretaries of BTR, NC Hills Autonomous Council and Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, that there is a shortage of basic amenities such as desks, benches, ceiling fans and water filters in government and provincialized schools. The letter further stated that there was a requirement for 2,06,464 ceiling fans in 31,353 elementary and 4,040 secondary schools in the State.

All Deputy Commissioners were asked to seek the assistance of alumni and the community as a whole by way of donating ceiling fans to the institutions concerned.

State Education Minister Dr Ranoj Pegu recently tweeted that in Assam, volunteers have so far contributed 1,00,964 ceiling fans; 2,978 exhaust fans; 369 infrastructures (ACR, toilets, boundary walls, solar panel, water tank, wash basin); 18,316 other materials and 1,065 teaching and training services.
