GUWAHATI: The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Cell arrested two government officials on alleged bribery charges in two separate operations on Friday.

According to sources, in the first case, a trap was laid by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption cell at the Samaria Revenue Circle in the Kamrup district, where an official was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe in his office. The official is identified as Pradip Kalita, Supervisor Kanungo, at the office of the Circle Officer. He was caught while accepting Rs 3,000 as a bribe from the complainant for the correction of his name in a land patta. The bribe money has been recovered from the drawer of his office table and has been seized accordingly in the presence of independent witnesses. In this connection, a case (05/2024) under Section 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) has been registered at the ACB Police Station.

Another official was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe from a complainant as a reward for releasing the complainant's bills against providing food items and arranging other amenities during the agriculture training programme. The official is identified as Budheswar Das, District Agricultural Officer, Goalpara. He was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000 from the complainant.

Budheswar Das was caught red-handed, in the presence of independent witnesses, immediately after he accepted Rs. 15,000 as part of the demanded bribe from the complainant in the office. The tainted bribe money has been recovered from his possession and has been seized accordingly in the presence of independent witnesses.

In this connection, a case (06/2024) under Section 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) has been registered at the ACB Police Station.
