We'll check criminals with public's cooperation: Commissioner of Police Diganta Borah

GUWAHATI: Commissioner of Police (CP), Guwahati, Diganta Borah has assured to ensure safety and security of the residents of the city and expressed the hope that the police will be able to meet all forthcoming challenges with the cooperation of the public.

Addressing a press conference at his office on Monday, the Commissioner of Police said that the police's goal is to curb criminals. He said that even though the occurrence of several crimes in the city at the same time sometimes gives the impression that crimes are increasing here, but statistics belie this misconception, Borah said.

Borah said that the city police achieved noteworthy success in its war against drugs last year. He said that the police is hopeful of ensuring a drugs-free society with the public's cooperation. He mentioned that no untoward incident took place on December 31 and January 1 last, and conveyed his thanks to police personnel for their diligence and to the public for their cooperation. No death occurred during these two days due to drunken or rash driving as people responded to the appeal made by the administration, the CP said.

Regarding incidents of snatching, 22 miscreants have been arrested so far and two pistols have also been seized in this connection. The police is taking various steps to curb incidents of theft in the city, he said, adding that in some cases thefts are committed by miscreants who come from nearby districts and return there after commission of the crime. He said that such organized crimes are a matter of concern, adding that many gangs of this type have been already busted.
