With Markets Stocked, Time To Fill Plates With Bihu Delicacies

GUWAHATI: The time of festivities for the people of the state has arrived and everyone is in high spirits, enjoying every perk of the celebrations. Markets are teeming with Bihu delicacies. The modern age has brought with it a few disadvantages, the contemporary men lack knowledge of making traditional delicacies and sometimes, even if when they know, they do not have the time to sweat in a kitchen making hot til pithas in tawas. This is where the market comes to the rescue offering all sorts of Bihu sweets and other items to sustain traditions.

The market of Guwahati is prospering with hoards of people thronging the stalls and the salesmen are equally thriving with the number of sales. Various kiosks are set up, where a packet of 15 pieces of til laru costs Rs 50; jaggery (gur) is priced at Rs 50 per kilogram, Joha rice Rs 70 per kilogram, Red Bora rice Rs 100 per kilogram, White Bora rice Rs 100 per kilogram, Joha Chira Rs 70 per kilogram, xando Rs 50 per kilogram, mah xorai Rs 30 per 200 grams, pitha guri Rs 50 per kilogram, xurum Rs 100 per kilogram, muri laro Rs 20 for a 10 piece packet, narikol laru Rs 50 for a 15 piece packet, narikol pitha Rs 50 for a 10 piece packet, til pitha Rs 50 for a 10 piece packet, muri Rs 30 per 250 grams, til pitha Rs 75 for a 10 piece packet, joun pitha Rs 75 for a 10 piece packet, gur laru Rs 50 for a 10 piece packet, black Joha rice pitha Rs 155 for a 9 piece packet, and black Joha rice Rs 160 per kilogram.

Along with the eateries, a handful of digloti makhioti costs anywhere between Rs 20 to 30 and pogha is priced at Rs 30 per piece. Raw turmeric (haldhi) costs Rs 40 per kilogram, eggplants Rs 40 per kilogram and bottle gourd (jati lau) Rs 50 to 70 per piece. The markets are stocked and all that remains is that for those few who have not yet made their Bihu purchases should dash to the nearest souk and start the festivities with delicious pithas.
