GUWAHATI: The AASU (All Assam Students' Union) on Friday opposed the decision of Tata Tea to shift its corporate office — Amalgamated Plantations Private Limited (APPL) from Assam to Kolkata.

The AASU underlined that the decision by the Tata Tea is against the interest of the State and it will not be executed at any cost.

In a statement, AASU president Dipanko Kumar Nath said, "After long-standing demands of the people of the State, the Tata Tea established its corporate office in Guwahati. We will never accept the decision to shift the APPL to Kolkata. The maximum tea gardens under the company are situated in Assam. Thus, the shifting of this company is not justified. The interests of the youths of Assam are at stake."

AASU general secretary Sankar Jyoti Baruah said that the AASU will write a letter to the Tata tea and urge them to roll back the decision. We will also request the Chief Minister to take strong steps against the decision, he added.

The AASU alleged that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and CM Sarbananda Sonowal, the public sectors industries of the State have been 'destroyed' one by one.

"Due to lack of interest from both the Central and State governments, Assam will lose the pride of its tea. We will not accept this at any cost," Nath added.
